- News on the Home front
- The existing Land Transfer Tax Refund Program has been expanded to include First Time buyers of resale homes. First time buyers of BOTH resale homes and new homes, are now eligible for a refund from the provincial government of up to $2000 of the land transfer tax paid www.rev.gov.on.ca/english/taxes/ltt/.
- Federal Budget for 2009 proposes increase from $20,000 to $25,000 withdrawal from RRSP’s for purposes of down payment for first time buyers. For more information, click on our “First Time Buyer” link in the title bar above.
- Buyers can also take advantage of the new Tax Free Savings Accounts established by many financial institutions as a good source of tax free funds accumulated towards various aspects of buying a home. More news on our “First Time Buyer” page.
- New non-refundable tax credit to help first time buyer’s with some of their closing costs. Again, please see “First Time Buyer” page for expanded information.
- Home Renovation Tax Credit
- Now through January 31, 2010, homeowners can claim a tax credit for 15% of renovations expenses between $1,000 and $10,000. Here’s a sample of what qualifies under the program and what does not:
- renovating kitchen, bath or basement
- new carpet or hardwood
- building an addition, deck, fence or retaining wall
- new furnace or water heater
- painting interior or exterior of your home
- resurfacing driveway
- laying new sod
- purchase of new furniture or appliances
- purchase of tools
- carpet cleaning
- maintenance contracts
(e.g. furnace cleaning, snow removal, lawn care)
